The city is not expected to get heavy rain in the coming days due to the effect the depression in the Bay of Bengal is having on the wind pattern. There is, however, a possibility of light rain. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into deep sea areas of central Bay of Bengal till October 10 and north Bay of Bengal till October 11.
The regional meteorological centre (RMC) has said the northeast monsoon is expected to set in only after the depression in the Bay of Bengal and the cyclone in the Arabian Sea eases. The RMC had earlier forecast that the monsoon would set in on Monday.
The city may get light rain as the depression in the Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify into a deep depression and into a cyclonic storm in the next 48 hours and move towards north Andhra Pradesh and Odisha. Rainfall will dip as it moves away. The forecast for the next 48 hours for the city said, the sky condition is likely to be generally cloudy. Light rain or thundershower is likely to occur in some areas. If the day is sunny, the maximum temperature is expected to be 33o C and the minimum 26o C.
A senior official of the regional meteorological centre said the northeast monsoon did not set in as forecast because of the effect of the two weather systems that had developed in the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea. “These two systems are affecting moisture and wind pattern. The rainfall is also not sustained. So it will be difficult to say when the monsoon will set in. The rain over south peninsular India is likely to decrease from Tuesday,” he added.
The RMC will closely monitor favourable wind patterns and assess the setting in of monsoon after the life cycle of the cyclonic storm over Bay of Bengal.
