Based on a complaint by a second-year government agricultural university student alleging sexual harassment by a professor, the Tiruvannamalai all-woman police on Saturday registered a case against six members including the university dean, university internal complaints committee officer, deputy warden and two fellow woman students for conspiring with the prime accused in the case.
On August 22, the 22-yearold woman studying at Tamil Nadu Agricultural College and Research Institute at Vazhavachanur in Tiruvannamalai submitted a petition to district principal judge G Mahizhendi. In the petition, she accused associate professor Thangapandian of sexually harassing her and complained about five others who tried to help the professor evade the charges.
According to her complaint, though she stopped the associate professor from trying to take sexual advantage of her, two more women students, the deputy warden of the university hostel and ICC officer tried to cover up the charges and threatened her not to speak out about the incident.
Based on a direction by the district principal judge, ICC committee from Coimbatore probed the charges and placed associate professor R Thangapandian under suspension in August and were inquiring into the complaint. “Citing that I had violated university norms by refusing to cope with the recent transfer to another campus of the university, I was terminated from the university in October,” she said. The woman then lodged a complaint with the Tiruvannamalai all-woman police station against Thangapandian and his accomplices including the dean, deputy warden, woman ICC officer and two girl students.
