Purohit says he’s changing the system
Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit on Saturday alleged corruption in the appointment of Vice-Chancellors of universities in the State in the past. He added that he was changing the system and ensuring that appointments were made on the basis of merit.
Speaking at an event in Chennai on Saturday, he said he was disheartened after coming to Tamil Nadu, because he heard from many people that crores had changed hands in the matter of appointment of Vice-Chancellors.
“I could not believe that. Then I decided things have to be changed,” Mr. Purohit said in his inaugural address during a conference on enhancing the quality of education, organised by the Bharatiya Shikshan Mandal.
He also said people would appreciate the fact that till date he had appointed nine Vice-Chancellors purely on merit and nobody could raise an accusatory finger at any of those appointments.
Mr. Purohit claimed things had started improving gradually, and it would take time to change the entire system.
In his view, the simple rule of management was to select the best. “If you have got a college, select the best principal. Guide him and leave it to him. You will get the best result, I tell you. Give him the freedom.”
