SC asks Tamil Nadu to follow NEET after Centre denies it exemption Dwayne Harmon22 August 2017, 03:57

The Supreme Court has rejected Tamil Nadu's executive order exempting its students from seeking admission to medical colleges on the basis of the NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) maintaining the earlier ruling that all medical admissions across the nation are to be conducted by a single entrance exam.

The state at present uses Class 12 marks to decide medical admissions.

As The Indian Express reported yesterday, the attorney general has said that the ordinance, sent by the Tamil Nadu government on the exemption of NEET, is not good in law. On Monday, Attorney General of India KK Venugopal reversed his opinion on a proposed State Ordinance to facilitate the one year exemption. The top court has asked the Tamil Nadu government to start counselling immediately and finish the process by September 4.

Further the court said the counseling should be conducted immediately and the process should end by September 4. According to the report, the TN government has asked the Medical Council of India (MCI) to sanction 2,700 more medical seats in the state in order to allay concerns of the Supreme Court about the fate of students from the state who have already cleared NEET.

The Centre is believed to have said that the Ordinance can not be accepted as the rules of the Neet can not be changed for just one state. On Monday, Attorney General KK Venugopal went back on his earlier opinion and said that the Ordinance was not "legally valid", according to The New Indian Express. The Centre's decision to scrap NEET has not been well received by a section of the students who plan to challenge the same.
