Chennai: At least 19 students of a school in Vepery were allegedly fined Rs2,500 and threatened with a 10-day suspension for skipping Independence Daycelebrations in the school.

While students were warned on August 16, they were told to stay out of class on August 17. "Parents were called but we couldn't even meet the authorities immediately. Later that day, a compromise was reached and the students were admitted into classrooms. However, the following day (August 18), these students were sent back. This is extremely unfair on the students," said Elango, a parent.

TOI was unable to reach school authorities for comment.
