CHENNAI: All four tiger cubswhich were born to tigress Uthra in Arignar Anna Zoological Park (Vandalur zoo) in Chennai on Sunday were found dead in the tiger enclosure on Monday with deep injuries on their stomachs.

A forest official said on Friday that the tiger cubs might have suffered deep injuries while their mother had tried to move them to a secluded place in the enclosure by holding them in her mouth. The cubs might have died after suffering excessive bleeding, he added.

"It is the first ever incident of all the cubs born to a tigress in this zoo dying," the official said.

"We couldn't do anything to save the cubs as tigresses won't let anyone go near them. We will take extra efforts to save the cubs when a tigress gives birth next time," he said.

Uthra was rescued from the Sathyamangalam forests when she was a cub. She was found abandoned by her mother. The cubs were born to her from Vijay, which was also rescued from forests.
