HC permits cultural events in temples with conditions

The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court, hearing a number of petitions seeking permission to conduct cultural programmes, including aadal paadal , in temple festivals, granted permission with conditions.
Justice M.S. Ramesh observed that permission for cultural programmes in temples could be granted, but they should be regulated by the police in order to avoid law and order situation or misuse of permission by resorting to vulgarity or obscenity. The court said that the events could be held between 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. and imposed the following conditions:
There should be no obscene or vulgar act or dialogues during the performance by any of the participants. No songs with double entendre shall be played out, so as to not spoil the minds of students and youth. No song or dance which shows affiliation to any religious or political party, community or caste shall be played. No flex board in support of any political party shall be erected and there shall be no discrimination made on the grounds of caste.
The court directed the police to take appropriate action if there was any violation of the conditions. The functions could be stopped if they went beyond the permissible time.
