Chennai’s ‘₹2 doctor’ honoured

Vellore: The secret of health is not medicine but regular exercise, said Dr V Thiruvengadam, famously known as the ‘Two Rupee Doctor’.
The 66-year-old doctor from Chennai was selected as the ‘VIT- The Weekend Leader Person of the year 2017’ for treating patients at low cost.
VIT vice-president G V Selvam honoured Dr Thiruvengadam with a citation and a cash prize of ₹25,000, a statement from VIT said.
The doctor does not charge for home visits even if he has to travel a distance to diagnose ailments and prescribe treatment. “I saw underprivileged people finding it difficult to meet medical expenses and then I decided to offer cost-effective treatment,” the statement quoted Dr Thiruvengadam as saying.
