Trichy : Bharathidasan University (BDU) has debarred an associate professor from guiding research scholars for life after he was found guilty of having indulged in malpractices. The decision against V Jayaraj, associate professor in the computer science department functioning on the BDU’s Kajahmalai campus, was taken at a meeting of the university syndicate on Thursday based on prima facie evidence.
TOI was the first to report on March 6 about such an irregularity committed by a BDU teaching faculty. Subsequently, the vice-chancellor constituted a committee to probe the allegation. The syndicate has also entrusted the vice-chancellor with the job of taking disciplinary action against Jayaraj considering the seriousness of the crime. As reported, Jayaraj had created fictitious email IDs to pose as external examiner
for his own research scholars. This was found during the viva voce of his research scholar a few days before the convocation held on February 21 after which the university withheld the PhD.
The alleged irregularity in the appointment of the registrar also figured at the syndicate meeting. After key administrative posts remained vacant for close to a year, appointments of registrar, controller of examination and director, Centre for Distance Education were made on December 11. But allegations were raised on the selection panel appointing Gopinath Ganapathy to the post of registrar allegedly at the cost of other candidates. Many questioned how Gopinath was given 10 full marks for publishing books and papers when he had kept the column unfilled in his applications. However, a section of syndicate members supported the appointment and ruled out favouritism. At this, the vicechancellor said he was convinced that it was a clerical error and there wasn’t any grave irregularity
