I-T dept to auction actor Srividya’s flat to clear dues

TIMES NEWS NETWORK   16.03.2018

The income tax (I-T) department has decided to auction the Chennai apartment of late Malayalam actress Srividya, to clear her long-pending liabilities.

The auction will be held on March 26 with a base price of ₹1.14 crore. The property at Abhiramapuram in Chennai was taken over by the I-T department when the actress, who starred in several Tamil, Malayalam and Telugu films, passed away in 2006. It is currently rented out to an advocate and the rent is collected by the department.

The executor of her will, legislator K B Ganesh Kumar, said that as per the document, all her immovable assets have to be sold and the income utilised in a way befitting commemoration of the late actress.

“Her tax liabilities will have to be settled first and also the bank liabilities on her residence in the capital will also have to be settled before selling it in auction. We will approach the high court after that with a proposal to hand over the revenue from the auction to Gandhi Bhavan and Snehabhavan equally, the two institutions that work for the destitute,” Kumar said.

At present, a dance school is functioning in the residence of the actress.

It is also learnt that the tenant who is residing in the apartment at present has moved the HC against the IT department auctioning the property.

Meanwhile, the decision to auction the property would come as great relief to the actor-turned-MLA.

He said, as being the executor of her will, he was unnecessarily drawn to controversy earlier, alleging that he is not doing anything to execute her will.

Srividya’s brother had in 2015 approached the then Kerala chief minister Oommen Chandy complaining against Ganesh Kumar who was then a minister.

“Even when I was a minister, I had given written requests to the income tax department, requesting them to complete their formalities and proceed with the auction,” Kumar said.
