Indian Railways on Thursday said Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) charges will not be levied on passengers for booking railway tickets on payment made through debit cards for a transaction value up to Rs 1 lakh, DHNS reports from New Delhi.

The move will make tickets slightly cheaper for passengers who book a berth at the railway ticketing counters as well as through IRCTC website.

Instructions to this effect have been issued to the banks by the Department of Financial Services.

The decision will help in promoting digital and cashless transactions, said a statement from the railways.
