Burglars struck at the house of a doctor at Nungambakkam and escaped with diamond and gold jewellery worth ₹1crore and ₹2 lakh cash on Tuesday night.
The incident came to light only on Wednesday at around 6am when the family returned from the UK.
The police said Dr V Kaushik , 46, of Kamdar Nagar, Second Street, Nungambakkam, works at a private hospital on Greams Road and also runs a clinic near his house. On June 18, the doctor and his family left for the UK on vacation.
He had employed a cleaner, a helper, a maid, a supervisor and a gardener to take care of the house.
On Wednesday after returning from the UK, the doctor opened his office room with the key kept in the pooja room and came to know about the burglary. Dr Kaushik filed a case with the Nungambakkam police.
The police pressed sniffer dogs and finger print experts into service.
When the police tried to collect footage from the CCTV cameras in the house, they found the cameras switched off since 11.30am on June 20.
“The crime might have taken place mid-afternoon. It seems a well-planned burglary. We suspect the handiwork of the employees in the crime and are questioning them,” said an investigating officer.
However, the employees told the police they did not turn up for work after the family had left for the UK.
The doctor in his complaint told police that ₹2 lakh, 12 bangles, 5 earrings, 2 diamond necklace, 10 watches and 5 diamond earrings are missing.
