Yoga and naturopathy centre coming up at Chengalpattu Medical College

Project being touted as the first of its kind in the country
An International Yoga and Naturopathy Medical Science Centre, which would offer academic and research programmes in addition to medical treatment, will be set up at a cost of Rs. 60 crore on the Chengalpattu Government Medical College campus in Kancheepuram district, Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami announced in the Assembly on Monday. The project is being touted as a first-of-its-kind initiative in the country.
In a suo motu statement, Mr. Palaniswami said that the Centre, spread over 50 acres, will offer graduation and diploma programmes and encompass a hospital with a research wing, hostels for students and quarters for employees.
“The Centre will specialise in and offer yoga, naturopathy, water therapy, acupuncture, acupressure, magnet therapy, herbal medicine, mud therapy, massage therapy and chromo therapy,” he said.
Mr. Palaniswami also announced the construction of additional floors for the Stanley Medical College Hospital, the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital and other government and taluk hospitals across the State.
While Rs. 22 crore would be earmarked for boosting infrastructure in medical colleges in Madurai, Coimbatore, Tirunelveli and Salem for outpatients, Rs. 21 crore would be spent on acquiring medical equipment for accident, emergency and trauma care in 64 government hospitals, including 20 medical college hospitals, 25 district headquarters hospitals and 19 taluk hospitals.
A Maternity and Children Wellness Centre in Kumbakonam at an outlay of Rs. 20 crore and another Rs. 20 crore for hostels for nursing students in Kancheepuram, the Nilgiris and Nagapattinam districts were also announced by the Chief Minister.
