The state government on Tuesday accepted that there was shortage of doctors in primary health centres (PHCs). Replying to a question, state health minister C Vijayabaskar, while blaming doctors clearing NEET PG exams for the shortage, said the vacancies in PHCs will be filled up within two months as the government will be appointing 700 doctors.
The issue was raised by DMK chief whip R Sakkarapani, who said that there are several PHCs across the state which are functioning without doctors. Similar demands were raised by several other MLAs.
Replying to the questions, Vijayabaskar said the shortage of doctors in PHCs is only temporary. “A total of 610 doctors working in PHCs have cleared PG NEET and have gone for higher studies,” said the health minister.
