Health department gives assurance to interns, PG students

Interns and postgraduate students of government medical colleges may soon get higher stipend. The Health Department has given an assurance to the protesting students that their stipend would be hiked soon.

Health Minister C.Vijaya Bhaskar along with the Health Secretary J. Radhakrishnan held a meeting with interns and postgraduates on Monday. Deans of government medical colleges in the city were present.

The medical students have been demanding an increase in stipend, pointing out that what they get in Tamil Nadu was one of the lowest in the country. In fact, the Director of Medical Education acknowledged that the stipend was low for interns and postgraduate medical students and took up their grievance to the government.

“The meeting with the medical students was successful. The government felt that the stipend has to be revised. A few other States revised their stipend, two to three years ago. The Minister has made a promise to the medical students,” a senior official of the Health Department said.

Panel to be formed

“It is three years since the revision was done. The Karnataka government is now planning to increase the stipend again. Following this, officials accepted our demand and assured that they will compare the stipend with ‘comparable’ States and issue a government order before July 15. A core committee that would include student representatives would be formed to decide the amount,” he said.
