A Special Tahsildar was arrested for allegedly issuing fake certificates to applicants over the past few years after taking several lakhs of rupees.
Police said that S. Murugan, 48, Adi Dravida Welfare Special Tahsildar, Nanguneri, was running a private consultancy firm near Palayamkottai bus stand for processing applications for housing and vehicle loans.
As he did not give salary to the woman assistant working in his office for the past three months, her father David asked Murugan to settle the salary dues immediately.
As it led to a heated argument between them, Murugan allegedly assaulted David, who lodged a complaint with Palayamkottai police.
When Sub-Inspector Shaik Abdul Khader went to Murugan’s office to inquire him on Tuesday, the police found in his possession more than 75 rubber stamps being used in various government offices, particularly in taluk offices, and nationalised banks.
When the police grilled Murugan, they found that he had amassed several lakhs of rupees in the past few years after issuing fake certificates to applicants using the fake rubber stamps he had in his office. After arresting Murugan, the police remanded him in judicial custody on Tuesday night.
