OCI students’ plea: Centre’s response sought

JUNE 27, 2018 00:00 IST

The High Court on Tuesday asked the Centre to spell out its stand on the issue of whether the Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) category students are eligible for admission under the private/institutional quota seats for undergraduate medical/dental courses.

A Division Bench comprising Justice H.G. Ramesh and Justice Mohammad Nawaz issued the direction during the hearing of the petitions filed by Colleen P. Mallier and several other OCI category students, who have been studying in Karnataka from the past seven to 10 years.

The petitioners have questioned the norm fixed by the State government that the OCI category students are eligible for admission to medical/dental courses only under the NRI quota. However, it has been been pointed out in the petition that the court last year had allowed the students to get admission under the private/institutional quota seats, and later the Supreme Court even allowed ICO category students to seek admission under government quota seats in government and private medical/dental colleges for the 2017-18.

The petitioners are seeking directions from the court to allow them to participate in the counselling, beginning June 29 for MBBS and BDS for 2018-19, and choose a seat under private/institutional quota in private medical/dental colleges.
