Updation of the machines has not been done yet, say officials
Nearly a year and a half after demonetisation was announced, the ticket vending machines in Chennai Metro Rail station still don’t accept new currency notes.
In November 2016, demonetisation came into effect and new currency including Rs. 2,000, Rs. 500 was circulated and then, new Rs. 10, Rs. 50 and Rs. 200 too were introduced.
Commuters say it is frustrating that the new notes aren’t accepted in these machines even now.
S. Rathnikumar, a resident of St. Thomas Mount, who travels to Gemini for work says, “I usually buy tickets from counters but that day, there was a long queue. So, I decided to get a ticket from the machine and inserted a new Rs. 200 note and it rejected it immediately. Then, I tried a Rs. 50 note and that too came out instantly. I lost my patience and decided to take a cab back home.”
According to the officials of Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), the machines had to be updated after demonetisation but the process has not been done yet.
“We will try and do it at the earliest,” a CMRL official said.
Chennai Metro Rail that covers 33 km with 26 stations, each of these stations has at least two such ticket vending machines; apart from these machines, there are also staff who man the counters to issue tickets.
Samyuktha D, another commuter, said, “We can understand if these machines don’t have change for Rs. 2,000. How can they justify if the machines reject new Rs. 10 and Rs. 50 notes.”
