Lateral entry: 70% seats in Anna univ to go vacant

More than 70 % of BE/BTech seats under the lateral entry quota in colleges affiliated to Anna University are expected to go vacant this year because of the poor response. Only 12,000 have applied for 35,000 seats available in 525 colleges across Tamil Nadu this year, according to recently available official data.

From being a soughtafter option after completing a diploma a few years ago, demand has come down over the years because of drop in placements.

In 2017, nearly 40 % of the engineering graduates ended up not getting a job, shows official data.

On the other hand, demand for diploma students has grown in leaps. Industries recruit engineers to diploma students in the ratio 1:30 because the latter are skilled and companies need not spend much on their training, said educational consultant E Moorthy Selvakumaran.

“Consequently, diploma students have started preferring to take up jobs instead of paying more to study for another three years to get an engineering degree,” he added.

“Manufacturing units in Hosur and Chennai offer a monthly salary of ₹12,000-₹14,000 to freshers. Unlike diploma students, many BE/BTech candidates will not be ready to work for this package. But diploma students go up the ladder soon because of their skill set,” said S B Chandran, principal of Government Polytechnic College in Coimbatore.

A Directorate Of Technical Education (DOTE) official said they have updated the polytechnic college syllabus frequently as per industry demands. “More than 50 % of what diploma students learn in their colleges are practical,” he added.

However, lateral entry admissions into top engineering colleges is still tough and only those with an aggregate score of 90% or above manage to get seats in government colleges.

Counselling to fill the lateral entry seats is expected to begin in a week or two, say government sources.
