Moving closer to fixing MBBS course fee for deemed universities across the country, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has formed a 11-member nationallevel fee regulation committee.
Standing counsel for UGC PR Gopinathan conveyed this to the first bench of chief justice Indira Banerjee and justice P T Asha on Tuesday when the PIL of advocate V B R Menon came up for further hearing on Tuesday.
The panel to be headed by New Delhi AIIMS former director RC Deka will include Dr O P Kaira, V-C, Pt BD Sharma University of Heath Science, Haryana; Saroj Chooramani Gopal, former V-C, King George Medical University, UP; Mahesh Verma, director, Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences, New Delhi; Ajay S Chandanwale, dean, BJ Medical College, Pune; S K Ray, former additional secretary, union ministry of HRD; Sanjay Shrivastava, former professor of ophthalmology; Dr B Srinivas, union ministry of family welfare; joint secretary of UGC, and two more members to be nominated by the MCI.
Panel to finalise fee by October 31
The development comes 18 days after the Madras high court capped annual MBBS fee for deemed universities in Tamil Nadu at ₹13 lakh, but made it clear that it would remain in force until the UGC formed the committee and fixed a fee.
On June 16, 2017, the court passed a similar order capping fee payable to deemed universities in Puducherry at ₹10 lakh. The UGC was mandated to form the comittee by June 30, and come out with its fee structure in four months.
However, last week the Supreme Court stayed the high court order, thereby permitting the Chennaibased Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute to collect its last year’s annual tuition fee of ₹22 lakh, this year as well. The apex court, also made it clear that it would be in force until the UGC committee finalises the fee.
On Tuesday, Gopinath said UGC’s 11-member committee would fix the fee payable for MBBS courses offered by deemed universities after giving fair chance to all stake-holders, including students and parents. Recording the submissions, the first bench directed the committee to finalise the fee structure by October 31.
