Chennai: Tension in school as cobra slithers into classroom

One of the teachers first noticed the snake but without panicking the students, she shifted them to the next class through a wooden partition in the hall.
Chennai: Panic prevailed in the Government higher secondary school at Morappur village in Maduranthakam, 60 km from the city on Friday after a cobra entered a classroom.
Police sources said that the incident happened around 2. 30 pm. The snake had entered class 6B through the verandah. Thirty-seven students were in the class.
The science teacher had noticed the snake and without panicking the students, she shifted them to the next class through the wooden partition in the hall.
After sending the students off, she too left the hall. The snake had entered a hall in the corner of the room. Maduranthagam police along with personnel from fire and forest department rushed to the school and after an ordeal of about a hour, they caught the snake..
Meanwhile, the school declared a holiday as snake catching became a spectacle. Over 900 students study in the government school, police said. The cobra was put in a sack and let into the forest, officials said. Parents gathered outside the school and pleaded with the authorities to ensure safety.
