Nurse arrested for posing as doc in hospital

TIMES NEWS NETWORK

Chennai : Patients at Chengalpet Government Hospital caught a lucky break on Tuesday — the city police arresting a 40-year-old woman for posing as a doctor before her quackery resulted in any serious harm.

Shakila Bobby, an MSc in nursing from west Cheyyur in Kancheepuram, who police said dreamed of being a physician, ended up at Institute of Mental Health Hospital, Kilpauk instead, after psychiatrists confirmed that she was delusional.

“Shakila, who worked as a nurse in a private hospital in the city, recently purchased a doctor’s apron and a stethoscope,” a police officer said. “She arrived at the government hospital on Tuesday, walked through corridors and visited various wards like a doctor on her rounds.”

An office assistant stopped her when she tried to step into the dean’s office. “The assistant had not seen Shakila before,” the officer said. “When she contradicted herself, he knew something was amiss and contacted the police.”

During questioning, Shakila confessed to the police that she was not a doctor. Her uncle said she had been treated for mental health issues. As instructed by a magistrate, the police had experts test Shakila before admiting her to the Kilpauk hospital .
