Prasath found hanging in hostel room; kin suspect foul play

R. Krishna Prasath, a native of Rameswaram who was pursuing Doctor of Medicine (MD) at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, allegedly committed suicide by hanging in his hostel room.

The first-year student was found dead on Monday morning. On information, his parents and relatives rushed to Chandigarh.

K.M. Aravindh, a native of Rameswaram and a schoolmate of the deceased, said Prasath was a bright student and had been aspiring to become a doctor since his school days. Initially, he joined the MD – General Medicine course at PGIMER on December 16, and recently switched over to Radiodiagnosis, Mr. Aravindh said.

“Prasath was in Rameswaram about 20 days ago and looked very normal and happy. It is hard to believe that he committed suicide, and we suspect foul play in his sudden death,” he said.

The police said that after repeated phone calls went unanswered, Prasath’s colleagues visited his house and found that the door was locked from the inside. “We reached the spot following information from his colleagues that they had found him hanging from the ceiling,” said Inspector Lakhbir Singh, Station House Officer of the Sector 11 police station.

He added that no suicide note was found at the scene. “We have registered a case. The parents of the victim have been informed and the post-mortem would be conducted tomorrow [Tuesday],” he said.

Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami announced compensation of Rs. 3 lakh to the family of the deceased.

(Assistance for overcoming suicidal thoughts is available on the State’s health helpline 104 and Sneha’s suicide prevention helpline 044-24640050.)
