The Madras High Court on Monday dismissed a public interest litigation petition filed by an advocate with a plea to restrain the Joint Action Committee of Teachers Organisations–Government Employees Organisations (Jactto-Geo) from resorting to any kind of protest in Chennai city without obtaining prior permission from the Commissioner of Police.
Not framed properly
Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice Abdul Quddhose said the prayer in the PIL petition had not been framed properly.
The judges held that the court could not injunct any organisation from staging protests.
However, the teachers and government servants were expected to hold protests without causing inconvenience to the general public, they added.
Traffic
In his affidavit, the petitioner, S. Sirgeth Naina Mohamed, had stated that vehicular traffic was thrown out of gear on February 21 when Jactto-Geo members went on a protest march from Chepauk to Fort St. George pressing various demands.
Claiming that the march was undertaken without police permission, he said the commonman was put to severe hardship on that day.
