Professors holding additional posts
After the Syndicate members raised issues of administrative delay, the University of Madras has decided to fill key posts such as the Controller of Examination and Directors for the Institute for Distance Education and University Students Advisory Bureau.
These posts are currently held by professors in addition to their positions in their respective departments.
At the Syndicate meeting held on Monday, the members raised the issue of delay in issuing degree certificates to candidates.
The university had delayed the convocation by over a year as there was no Vice-Chancellor.
Soon after P. Duraisamy took over as the V-C last year, the convocation was held. But there was a delay in despatching certificates and the Higher Education Secretary Sunil Paliwal wanted to know why there was a delay of over six months.
According to a member, Controller of Examinations M. Srinivasan, also the head of the Department of Criminology, was not able to answer satisfactorily the questions raised at the meeting.
Mr. Paliwal then suggested that a full-time CoE be appointed in his place.
‘Argument far-fetched’
Some members raised the issue of conflict of interest when a university professor takes charge as the CoE, as the person would be on the Board of Studies as well as in charge of question paper setting. But Mr. Paliwal termed the argument that he could be biased as far-fetched “since the Controller of Examination is generally from within the university.”
Mr. Duraisamy said the administration would get approval from the Finance Committee next month and then go for appointments of posts such as CoE, Directors for Institute of Distance Education, University Students Advisory Bureau and Coordinator for National Service Scheme after.
“As per statutes, the CoE post is whole time post and we will nominate someone on a full-time basis till the post is filled,” he added.
We will nominate someone for the post of Controller of Examination on a full-time basis
