DVAC plans to interrogate 64 persons

Officials with the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) said that the agency is currently conducting two separate and simultaneous investigations against A. Ganapathi, Vice-Chancellor of Bharathiar University, who was arrested on graft charge.

Apart from the case related to the arrest of Ganapathi while accepting Rs. 1 lakh as bribe on Saturday, DVAC is investigating another complaint it received against him in 2017 related to irregularities in appointments. The two cases are being probed by two investigating officers.

A senior official with DVAC said that the agency has planned to interrogate 64 persons who are in various positions at the university and outside in connection with the complaint pertaining to 2017. However, the officials did not divulge much about the complainant and the nature of petition.

Meanwhile, the Special Court for Prevention of Corruption Act cases on Tuesday adjourned hearing on the the bail plea submitted by Ganapathi and N. Dharmaraj, Professor with Department of Chemistry at Bharathiar University, to Thursday.

The hearing was adjourned after the court accepted the plea of the prosecution seeking additional time for investigation. The prosecution submitted that the investigation is at the preliminary stage and various details pertaining to allegations levelled against Ganapathi and other accused are being collected and corroborated.

Interacting with reporters, C. Gnanabharathi, counsel for Ganapathi and Dharmaraj, claimed that the two accused were framed in the case and they were innocent.

The FIR filed by the DVAC has also named R. Mathivanan, Director (in charge) of the School of Distance Education of Bharathiar University, as an accused in the case. The three persons have been booked under Section 7 (public servant taking gratification other than legal remuneration in respect of an official act) of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
