Murugan Idli unit sealed for lack of trade licence

TIMES NEWS NETWORK  20.03.2018

Chennai: Greater Chennai Corporation on Monday sealed a restaurant, which belonged to a popular south Indian hotel chain, in West Mambalam as the management had not obtained a trade licence.

Revenue officials attached to Zone 10 (Teynampet) of the corporation sealed Murugan Idli shop on Arya Gowda Road.

“We had issued several notices and warnings to the hotel to obtain trade licence. But they (hotel) did not pay heed,” said a corporation revenue official.

Trade licences are mandatory to operate a business in the city. Corporation officials also locked the building from which the restaurant was functioning as the building owner had defaulted on property taxes.

“The building owner had not paid property tax for many years, the dues amount to around ₹13 lakh,” said a corporation official. The official added that the building owner, who is related to a former legislator, used “political clout” to threaten corporation officials in the past and prevented them from discharging their duties. “He (owner) owns two other buildings in T Nagar, one on Usman Road and the other on Natesan Road, and has not paid property tax for those buildings as well. We will be initiating action on these structures soon,” the official said.

The building which housed the shop seems to be a hub of illegal businesses and tax defaulters as two other businesses functioning out of the building were locked and sealed by the civic body for irregularities. “These shops too had not obtained trade licences,” the official added.
