Wrong spelling: 6-yr-old’s head banged on bench

Pune: A six-year-old Class I student at Swami Samarth English Medium School in Bhosari was allegedly beaten up by ateacher for making a spelling mistake in his classwork book.

The teacher banged the hapless student’s head on the bench before beating him with a duster and stick inside the classroom on Thursday, police said. The boy sustained injuries to his head and on his back and had to be taken to Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial Hospital where he was treated and later discharged.

The boy’s father, who lodged a complaint against the teacher, handed over the hospital’s medical report relating to injuries to the victim, to the Bhosari police where an offence punishable under Section 324 (voluntarily causing hurt) of the Indian Penal Code was registered.

Sanjay Patil, a senior official of the school, told TOI, “We learned about the case only after the complaint was registered with the police. We will speak to the teacher concerned and students who were present in the classroom before taking any action.” When contacted on Sunday evening, the boy’s father said, “My son has been admitted again in the hospital today. I am not in a position to speak about the incident right now.”

The boy’s father said in his complaint that his son from school around 3.15pm on Thursday. While they were on their way home, the boy told him that he was beaten by his teacher for having misspelt a word in his classwork book, the father said.

The complainant said he noticed some swelling on his son’s head and took him to hospital for treatment where he also found the boy’s back was black and blue with the whipping marks caused by the stick.

The Bhosari police said they were investigating the matter and will soon record the state of the boy and others.
