Chennai: The state selection committee will have at least a dozen self-financing colleges offering 1,350 MBBS seats including 100 seats from Vellore based Christian Medical College, although there will no additional seats in existing government colleges or new colleges other than the 22 state-run colleges.

Many students and parents are excited that the Christian Medical College will join the state counselling allowing at least 35 seats in the open category for meritorious students. “The college has excellent faculty, clinical material and campus. The fee for the college is less than one sixth the cost of government colleges,” said V Anand, whose son is hoping a seat in one of the top colleges. “We are now discussing that if he does not make it to the Madras Medical College, Stanley or Madurai, he should opt for CMC, Vellore,” he said.

Nevertheless, it may not be easy for students to make that choice as the state selection committee says it will open seats in self-financing colleges only after it closes admissions to government colleges.

The state has 2,900 seats in 22 government colleges (includes ESIC College in Singanallur) of which it has surrendered 15% of the seats in each of the colleges to the Centre for admission under the All India Quota. This year, 12 of the 16 self-financing colleges will take part in the counselling, according Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University registrar Dr T Balasubramanian. In addition there will be 150 seats in Raja Muthiah College in Chidambaram.

The Medical Council of India has debarred Annapoorna Medical College and Hospital, Salem, Madha Medical College & Research Institute, Chennai and Annaii Medical College and Hospital. The state university has not included Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan Medical College and Hospital, Perambalur as it has not paid affiliation fee. “All affiliated college can admit students only through state counselling,” he said.

State selection committee secretary Dr G Selvarajan said the committee is yet to receive a written communication from all self-financing colleges on the number of seats they are giving to the government quota seats. Admission to the remaining seats will be done under the management quota by the selection committee.
