CHENNAI: Graduates who are interested in educating children with disabilities can get specialised training through the new ‘BEd special education — multiple disabilities’ programme that has been launched by Vidyasagar, a city-based NGO.

The two-year full-time programme aims to create multifaceted professionals equipped to work with persons with disabilities in all settings. The 33-year-old NGO runs a special school in the campus, which will help students get comprehensive training, said KS Uma from Vidyasagar.

This course is affiliated to the Tamil Nadu Teacher Education University and recognised by the Rehabilitation Council of India. The course will comprise three main papers: education, special education and subject of expertise.“Special instructors from Vidyasagar itself will train all students and guest lecturers will be invited for other subjects,” said Uma.

After completion of the BEd programme, students can either work at special schools, inclusive institutions or write standard qualifying examinations to apply for different government jobs. Students with disabilities are often forced to drop out because teachers are not trained to meet their special needs.
