CHENNAI: AC Shanmugam, founder of Dr MGR Educational and Research Institute, has received a honorary Fellow of Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons (FRCPS) doctorate from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in Glasgow. Shanmugam is the second Indian after former president KR Narayanan to receive this honour.
Shanmugam received the honorary doctorate at the renowned Bute Hall in the Royal College of Physicians on Monday. Steps to bestow this honour on Shanmugam are said to have begun in 2012 when the former principal of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons visited the Rajeshwari Medical College and Hospital founded by Shanmugam in Bengaluru.
RCPS officials, who visited the college in 2013, were apparently surprised that Shanmugam was providing the poor with world class medical facilities for free. The 1300-bed hospital boasts 30 modular surgical facilities and five super-specialty centres and has a daily outpatient count of over 3000 people.
