CHENNAI: In an unfortunate incident of a speeding car ramming a lorry on the Tiruchy - Chennai national highway, 4 youngsters, including 2 medical students died near Kancheepuram, on Saturday early morning.

According to police sources, students of Dharmapuri Medical College, Deepan Chakravarthy (22) of Tiruppur and Prasanth (23) of Namakkal had arrived in Chennai a few days ago to meet latter's elder brother who is also pursuing medicine at Madras Medical College.

After meeting his brother, Prasanth and Deepan had arranged a tour of Thiruvannamalai district and were joined by friends Aishwarya (23) of Thrissur, Akila (23) of Trivandrum, Sarath Amara Sai (23) of Red Hills and Mehar Sugumar (23) of Ongole. “All of them are IT professionals. They left the city on Friday and were returning on Saturday early morning and Deepan was at the wheel,” the police said.

On the Tiruchy - Chennai national highway near Kulambakkam between Maduranthagam and Padalam, the car rammed a lorry, which was parked on the roadside after a breakdown at around 6 am. “Due to low light and rain, Deepan might have lost sight of the lorry parked on the roadside,” the police said.

The police also said that the impact resulted in the car being trapped under the lorry. Deepan Chakravarthy, Prasanth and Aishwarya had died on the spot.

Padalam and Maduranthagam police, with the help of fire and rescue personnel, rescued Akila, Sarath Amara Sai and Mehar Sugumar who had been severely injured.

“All the three persons were sent to Chengalpattu Government Medical College Hospital for treatment, where Mehar Sugumar succumbed to his injuries. Akila and Sarath Amara Sai are under treatment,” the police said. The bodies of the dead persons were handed over to the parents after autopsy. The Padalam police have registered a case and are investigating the incident.
