Airtel, Vodafone subscribers cry foul despite assurances

Chennai: Mobile service providers Airtel and Vodafone’s networks were down for some time on Thursday and Friday leaving hundreds of subscribers with no connectivity.

While both companies have issued statements saying the network issues had been resolved, several subscribers continue to face issues.

“Due to a technical glitch, services for some of our postpaid users were impacted for a brief duration. The services have been fully restored and are back to normal. The inconvenience caused to our customers is deeply regretted," said an Airtel spokesperson.

Sources in the telecom industry say the unprecedented mass movement of subscribers from Aircel to Vodafone and Airtel could have created problems. Over 3.5 million Aircel users have moved to Airtel, Vodafone and BSNL since last month after Aircel networks faced severe downtime.

Several former Aircel users who have ported are waiting for their numbers to be activated.

“I ported from Aircel to Airtel last week. I’ve called the customer care number but had no luck. How does one manage without an active number,” said Arun Kumar, a city based professional.

Earlier in the week, S Murali, business head, Tamil Nadu, Vodafone said, “We have augmented capacity and added bandwidth to support the increasing demand from our own customers as well as new ones. Our retail stores have been open all seven days for the last few weeks.”

In a statement made late Friday night, Vodafone said, “There was a technical snag that affected certain parts of Tamil Nadu, leading to an intermittent disruption in network connectivity for a short period of time. Our network team managed to resolve the problem and restored normalcy immediately.”

Users in Anna Nagar are among the severely affected. “I have feeble network and the call drops have been escalating. I can barely hear anything over a call and it keeps getting cut. I am relying on my landline for now,” said Karthik Vigneshwaran, an Airtel and Vodafone user.
