Chennai: 08.06.2018
Nearly 40% of the construction industry in the state is using M-sand, said chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami in the assembly on Thursday. He said efforts were being taken to make the entire sector shift to M-sand to save the rivers in the state.
The chief minister said the government had given quality certificates to 24 companies which deal in M-sand. He said the government was committed to encouraging firms keen on making manufactured sand.
He was responding to queries from Singanallur DMK MLA N Karthik, who wanted the government to explain its Msand policy. Karthik asked, “What is the awareness among people about using M-sand? Does the government permit import of river sand”?
The chief minister said, “We have made it clear that M-sand would be popularised for use in construction sector in the state in the next three years. As of now, 40% of the construction activity happens using M-sand. It is not possible to force people use M-sand. The transition will take some more time. The government has taken steps to import river sand, and tenders will be floated in this regard soon.” TNN
