Belagavi-based RTI activist fetches information from PMO

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s foreign trips have cost the Exchequer Rs. 377 crore, as per information received by a Belagavi-based RTI activist. What is more, this does not cover the expenses for security as the Special Protection Group, which handles the Prime Minister’s security, is exempt from the RTI Act. Bheemappa Gundappa Gadad of Mudalagi village in Gokak taluk had sought information on the Prime Minister’s foreign trips and the cost incurred. The reply was received on May 2. Undersecretary and Pubic Information Officer in the Prime Minister’s Office Praveen Kumar has replied that the Prime Minister visited 52 countries in four years that he has been at the helm.

The highest cost of Rs. 32 crore has been incurred for the Prime Minister’s trips to France, Germany and Canada. But the least has been his visit to Bhutan that cost Rs. 2.45 crore.

Mr. Gadad has described this as wasteful expenditure. He has urged the Prime Minister’s Office to reveal the tangible benefits of these foreign trips.
