Bareilly:

A man allegedly strangled his 24-year-old wife on Thursday as he was unable to “find beauty” in her even a year after their marriage. The incident was reported from Jagtira village under Aonla police station. Police have arrested the accused after registering an FIR against him.

Nighat (who went by her first name) was a resident of Hindor village in Badaun. She married Tasavvar Khan, 26, in March, 2017.

Ever since the wedding, her husband and brother-in-law Sanabber, 24, had allegedly been threatening to kill her because she was ugly while her mother-inlaw Humeem and father-in-law Mubashir were demanding dowry.

Nehaluddin, father of Nighat said, “Her in-laws were threatening to kill her. They used to tell her that she was ugly and that she should ask for dowry from me to get her therapy with a beautician. Her in-laws used to beat her brutally for not getting dowry.”

“At around 2pm on Thursday, I was shocked when I received a phone call from Nighat. She was crying and begged me to take her away from her in-laws’ house. My wife Afroz Begum and I were on the way when Tasavvar called to tell us that she had committed suicide. On reaching their house and seeing her body, I immediately dialed 100 and informed police,” Nehaluddin added.

Aonla police station house officer (SHO) Pankaj Verma said, “We received information about the death from Nehaluddin. We found Nighat’s body in her bedroom and sent it for postmortem.”
