: Former chief minister J Jayalalithaa suffered from ‘acute left ventricular failure’ on October 4 and September 22, said sources in the Arumughaswamy commission. Dr Archana, one of the duty doctors at Apollo Hospital who treated Jayalalithaa, was asked questions regarding the medical term on Tuesday, sources said.
The heart condition was mentioned by a respiratory specialist at Apollo Hospitals in the medical details filed with the commission, sources said. “This medical condition of Jayalalithaa is not a matter of dispute,” a source privy to Tuesday’s proceedings said.
An expert said the condition means the heart’s pumping efficiency is not enough to match the body’s needs.
On September 22, 2016, Jayalalithaa developed breathing problems and was unconscious when she was driven to Apollo Hospitals, according to affidavits filed by her aide V K Sasikala. Jayalalithaa died on the night of December 5 after suffering a cardiac arrest.
Archana was also the doctor on duty when Jayalalithaa’s voice, purportedly her last, was recorded in the presence of Dr Sivakumar, her personal physician and Sasikala’s relative. It was released by the commission last week.
Sasikala’s counsel Rajkumar Pandian was also present during the deposition.
Pandian said Archana spoke about her being a duty doctor when Jayalalithaa was in the hospital. “Archana said she spoke to Jayalalithaa on a few occasions,” he added.
Archana also saw then stand-in governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao at the hospital, Pandian said. However, when the commission asked her if Jayalalithaa saw the governor, she could not confirm it, Pandian said.
Staff nurse Renuka also deposed before the commission on Tuesday where she said she had spoken to Jayalalithaa during her hospitalisation.
The commission has summoned another duty doctor Dr Prasanna and staff nurse Sheila for a deposition on Wednesday.
