Counselling for admission to engineering courses in the state is likely to begin on July 6. Random numbers for candidates seeking admission through single-window counselling were released on Tuesday.
The random number, a 10-digit computer-generated figure assigned to all candidates, is used when two or more candidates share the same marks in maths, physics, chemistry, the fourth optional subject and date of birth. In these situations, higher value (random number) will be given preference. These numbers played a role in admission of 121 candidates in the last three years, official data showed.
Higher education minister K Anbazhagan said this year saw an increase of 19,00 applicants compared to 2017. Certificate verification for the 1.59 lakh applicants would take place between June 8 and 14 at Tamil Nadu Engineering Admission Facilitation Centres across the state. In Chennai, the process would end on June 17.
After this, the rank list will be released and counselling is likely to begin on July 6 but dates may change according to medical counselling. This year, 83,727 postmatric students — meritorious students from backward communities — and 16,870 first graduates — the first of their families to apply for a college-level education — have applied.
