The Union health ministry on May 31 denied renewal of 250 MBBS seats in various medical colleges in Tamil Nadu this year.

Apart from this, the ministry also denied permission to add 300 new seats to government medical colleges in Madurai, Tirunelveli and Chettinad institute.

This indicated that the competition was going to be even tougher than what was anticipated after the NEET results were out.

In the public notice released on May 31, the ministry announced that four medical colleges in Tamil Nadu have been denied permission to renew MBBS seats for the forthcoming academic year (2018-19).

Of this, two were not available even for last year’s admission process and their proposals were not approved for deficiencies in necessary infrastructure and resources.

Annapoorna Medical College and Hospital, which appears in the Tamil Nadu Dr MGR University’s list of recognised self-financing colleges available in last year’s government counselling, has been denied permission for renewal this year. A total of 150 MBBS seats were offered by this institute based in Salem last year. The other college, a private university based in Chennai, has been denied permission to offer 250 seats. Instead, it has been allowed to admit only 150 MBBS students.

Since this is a deemed to be university, counselling for these seats would be conducted directly by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

G R Ravindranath from Doctors’ Association for Social Equality (DASE) said, “Though it is true that quality can’t be compromised, this reduction in seats will increase the competition for government quota seats as performance of TN students has improved compared to the previous year.”

Educational consultant Moorthy Selvakumaran said, “The competition for management quota seats in private colleges will also increase and this will pave the way for admissions through black market by paying hefty amounts as capitation fee.”
