TIMES OF INDIA
On the day the Supreme Court clarified that it will not modify the order on a national common entrance test, Medical Council of India vice-president Dr C V Bhirmanandham said the merit list based on the test to be conducted by CBSE will be sole criterion for MBBS admissions across the country. In an interview with TOI, he said NEET exams will be mandatory for all states and any violation will amount to contempt of court.
What will MCI do to bring on board states like Tamil Nadu that oppose NEET?
There is no option for states. The SC has made it clear that the exam must be held in two phases. The first will be held this Sunday as per schedule. The second phase will be held on July 24. Even today the SC said it will not modify its order. Any violation will amount to contempt of court.
Will this examination be a qualifying test for admissions or the sole criterion for medical admission?
Going by the SC, order it will be the sole criterion. CBSE will release the combined result on August 17. The court has said it will provide the all India rank too. The state selection committee in Tamil Nadu has to admit students after counselling and merit list should be drawn based on the rank list CBSE releases.
Can states reduce weightage of NEET and combine it with Class 12 marks or with their own entrance tests?
No. There will be no question of reducing weightage given to the rank list. Our job will be to check whether admissions are done as per the rank list. States like Tamil Nadu will be allowed to use 69% reservation, but they will not be allowed to tamper with the merit list. With the present order, we have the powers to declare any admission as void if the central merit list is not followed.
Don't you think it will be tough for state board students to prepare for the examination at such short notice?
It may be tough. We have different systems of education and different boards in different states. While in Tamil Nadu students write the Class 12 exams in school, their counterparts in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh attend pre-university or intermediate college. We need a level playing field. NEET offers it. Over a period of time we will have to uniform standards in school education.
What will students who learn in different languages do? What will the medium of NEET be?
This being the first year, CBSE is considering examinations in different regional languages. But students will study MBBS only in English.
