200 scorpions rescued from hawker

Trichy: Representatives of Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) rescued 200 venomous scorpions, including a few black scorpions, from a hawker selling oil extracts for headache in Trichy on Sunday. The scorpions retrieved from the 60-year-old hawker were later let out into a suitable forest habitat near Kaatukeelakurichi.

According to AWBI sources, the board was informed about the hawker displaying scorpions on a road near Ponmalai Market to attract locals for selling oil extracts products. On information, AWBI members rushed to Ponmalai and found S Samsudeen of Kanda Nagar in Musiri with the scorpions.

For the past 30 years, Samsudeen had been selling oil extracts. “It seems, to attract people and also to project himself as a natural healer, the hawker displayed at least 200 scorpions including a few black scorpions in plastic boxes,” an AWBI member said. TNN
