Dentist stabs friend to death at hotel

Chennai: A dentist allegedly stabbed to death his friend, a 32-year-old call centre employee, at a beach side hotel in Mamallapuram on Saturday night after an argument turned ugly .
The deceased was identified as Sanjeev Raj, a native of Udumalaipet who was working in Guindy. Police arrested Senthil Raj, 42, a dentist working as a senior manager in a private firm at Ekkatuthangal and charged him with the murder.
Police said Senthil, a divorcee living with his son, was not happy with Sanjeev’s friendship with his former wife Surekha. Sanjeev was a colleague of Surekha.
Sanjeev along with 20 other friends had organised a Christmas party at the hotel. They came on Saturday morning and decided to leave on Sunday evening.
They booked five rooms to spend the weekend. Sanjeev also brought his dentist friend Senthil, from Guindy, to the party.
“While the women colleagues retired to their rooms after dinner at 10pm, the men gathered for drinks in a room,” said an investigating officer.
All of them began joking with each other, when Sanjeev, who had invited Surekha also to the party, confronted Senthil. A scuffle broke out when Senthil questioned him on his relationship with his ex-wife.
The others tried to pacify Senthil but in vain. In a fit of rage, Senthil took out a pen knife and stabbed Sanjeev.
The victim suffered serious injuries to his stomach and chest, police said. The frightened female members of the group vacated the hotel soon after the murder.
Senthil too fled the spot. He reportedly took a bus to Chennai. The other friends took the victim to a nearby private hospital where the doctors on duty declared him brought dead.
The Mamallapuram police registered a case and launched a hunt for the suspect. They sent the body of the victim to the Chengalpet government hospital for postmortem.
After an intense search, the police nabbed the dentist from a bus near Kovalam. He was booked on murder charges and later arrested.
Police sources said that Sanjeev was trying to patch up the discord between the estranged couple, which led to a heated exchange of words and culminated in the murder.
Police are questioning Senthil further in this connection. They are also interrogating the others who were present at the party on Saturday.
