Aadhaar: Linking documents, deadlines, and everything else you need to know

A five-judge Constitution bench of the Supreme Court may this week decide on whether to grant an interim stay on Aadhaar being made mandatory. This, based on a plea by petitioners who challenged the unique ID's validity saying it violates the right to privacy and who requested an early hearing in the matter.

Here is a look at the documents and services that need to be linked with Aadhaar, and other important details about the case:

*Linking Aadhaar and Permanent Account Number (PAN)

The deadline to link Aadhaar with PAN was extended to March 31, 2018 from the earlier December 31, 2017

*Linking Aadhaar and mobile number

The last date to link Aadhaar with one's mobile phone number is February 6, 2018. The linking can be done at a store or a service centre of a service provider, or by calling customer service. From January 1, the two can also be linked sitting at home, via a voice-guided system and a one-time password.

*Linking Aadhaar and bank account

The deadline for linking bank accounts and mutual fund portfolios with Aadhaar is December 31, 2017. The linking can be carried out at the bank's branch or through the internet or mobile banking. (Incidentally, showing proof of Aadhaar is mandatory for those who want to open new bank accounts.)

*Linking Aadhaar and Universal Account Number (UAN)

It is mandatory to link Aadhaar-UAN to open or hold an Employees' Provident Fund, or EPF, account.

*Linking Aadhaar and insurance policy

The deadline to link insurance policies with Aadhaar is December 31, 2017. A customer needs to log onto insurance company websites or visit the customer service department of the provider for the same.

*Linking Aadhaar and ration card

This is especially important to purchase foodgrain and fuel at discounted prices.

*The Centre has said it will extend the deadline for mandatory linking of Aadhaar for services and welfare schemes to March 31, 2018.

*The SC had earlier rebuked banks and mobile telephone companies for sending customers messages saying their accounts will be deactivated if they don't link them to Aadhaar.


*The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has been at pains to assure people that Aadhaar data is safe and secure. It has denied reports of data leaks.

*However, last year, the UIDAI urged people to be "discreet" about sharing their Aadhaar and other identity documents. It had asked them to self-attest copies of their Aadhaar cards and state the purpose clearly to prevent misuse.
