V-C aspirants list raises questions

Candidates’ credentials should be provided: academicians
The Bharathidasan University, which released the list of applicants for the post of vice-chancellor last Monday, has received as many as 241 applications for the post.
On its website, the university has also listed out the aspirants whose applications were rejected along with the reason for doing so.
While only one person had applied to the convenor of the V-C search committee in violation of the rules, the other applications were received via e-mail after the deadline. Though teachers’ associations have welcomed the change, they have certain reservations. One senior professor felt the committees should also list the applicant’s credentials to enable people to better judge his or her calibre.
Teachers are surprised that the university has received more applications than the Thiruvalluvar University.
But a source in the higher education department said the search committee of the Bharathidasan University had written to many institutions abroad inviting applications.
The Association of University Teachers wants the V-C search committees to recommend persons with “academic credibility and administrative ability”.
The V-C should not be bureaucrats but academicians who are not facing any corruption charges currently, the association has urged.
