Vellore: Thiruvalluvar University continues to make headlines for all the wrong reasons as yet another case of appointment of an ineligible candidate as faculty has surfaced. Sources in the university said A Panneerselvam joined the zoology department as an associate professor after facing an interview in November 2010. He reportedly submitted bogus teaching experience certificates and misrepresented the facts in his application form.
“Though the senior officials in the university are well aware of it, they are not prepared to take any corrective measures. It is giving a free hand to errant officials and staff to exploit the university,” said a faculty at the university.
When contacted, Panneerselvam refused to speak on the charges against him.
Thiruvalluvar University vice-chancellor K Murugan said, “We will verify the documents and records of the person concerned. If we find any anomalies in his application and misrepresentation of facts, we will bring it to the notice of the syndicate. Action will be taken based on the direction of the syndicate.”
Details availed of under the RTI Act serve as a testimony to the claims. Panneerselvam submitted teaching experience certificates from AVVM Sri Pushpam College in Tanjore, P R Engineering College in Tanjore and Vinayaka Missions University in Salem. In the application, he also stated that he guided five PhD students during his tenure at Vinayaka Missions University.
However, the RTI replies from the institutions refute each of the claims. Registrar of Vinayaka Missions University stated that Panneerselvam joined the institution on February 27, 2006, as a research coordinator and continued till August 28, 2007. His duty was to oversee the PhD files, application verifications and conduct protocol meetings. He guided only one PhD student – D Manivel.
The management of the P REngineering College replied to the RTI application stating that the copy of Panneerselvam’s service certificate mentioning that he worked at the institution was ‘not’ genuine.
S Udayakumar, principal of AVVM Sri Pushpam College (Autonomous), replied to the RTI application that ‘no such person’ in the name of A Panneerselvam had worked as lecturer in the department of biotechnology from June 1999 to November 2004.
The service certificate issued to Dr A Panneerselvam by principal S Raman was not genuine since the latter had retired in May 2000.
