Track your bus as it nears geocoded Chennai stops

TIMES NEWS NETWORK   23.03.2018

Chennai: The MTC has geocoded all the city bus stops to help commuters track locations of buses, said transport secretary PWC Davidar on Thursday.

In his address at an event, the Davidar said a team of MTC officials have worked for the last three months to add GPS locations to MTC bus stops in the city. “Geocoding gives every bus stop an ID,” he said during the lecture series organised by Chevening Alumni India at the CMRL office premises in Koyambedu.

This is a part of the preparation to introduce intelligent transport system. There are roughly about 1,820 bus stops in the Chennai corporation limits.

In the next three months, the secretary said, they are expecting to cover bus stops across the state. For that purpose, the MTC team that worked in the city will train employees from other transport corporations. The state has eight transport corporations. “Once we get the base data, we can build on it,” he said.

“An application is required to track bus location from a geocoded bus stop. But there also has to be a device on the bus,” he said.

The transport secretary added his department is also working to install GPS devices in the buses that will help commuters track buses. “A couple of devices have been offered to us and we are looking at the possibility,” he said. “It is also possible with a GPS-enabled electronic ticketing machine. But it will cost more.”

Davidar said they are also working to solve several other challenges the transport department is facing in the day-to-day operations including a durable electronic ticketing machine that can read smart cards and cost-effective simulators to train bus drivers.

MTC is planning to install GPS devices along with smart card-enabled electronic ticketing machines as part of intelligent transport system when the government provides new buses.
