This is the first time the TN government has come out with such a direct attack against the Governor.

Governor Banwarilal Purohit

Chennai: The AIADMK government has accused Governor Banwarilal Purohit of functioning “unilaterally” in appointing Dr M. K. Surappa as vice chancellor of Anna University and said the government was not consulted.

Criticising the Governor, state law minister C. V. Shanmugam said he could not understand why the Governor’s choice fell on a person from Karnataka though scores of renowned scholars like for instance former President A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, are there in Tamil Nadu.

“The state government has no role in the appointment. The Governor is functioning unilaterally and did not consult the democratically elected government. It is sad he has chosen a person from Karnataka. It is not only in AIADMK rule, even in DMK regime the governors functioned unilaterally,” Mr Shanmugam alleged.

This is the first time the TN government has come out with such a direct attack against the Governor though the DMK and other Opposition parties have been accusing Mr Purohit of violating the state autonomy by conducting review meetings with the state officials across the state.
