B’luru edu trust founder hacked to death in school

Bengaluru:15.10.2018

A 63-year-old man was stabbed to death inside the premises of a school in Bengaluru on Sunday morning over a property dispute. The victim — K R Ranganath, founder and chairman of an educational trust — had called the owners of an adjacent property for a meeting and the issue seemed to have been settled but the killers returned moments later to attack Ranganath. One of the accused was shot at by police and arrested, while the other is on the run.

Chethan Singh Rathor, DCP (in-charge for west division), said Ranganath had called the meeting at Havanur Public School and PU College in Papaiah Garden around 10.30am. Ranganath alias Ranganath Nayak was the founder of Sri Maruthi Vidya Samsthe, which runs the institution.

Ranganath was in a dispute with Gangamma, who owned the plot next to the school. The cause of the dispute was a 10-foot strip and it lingered even after Gangamma died a few years ago. Ranganath obtained a favourable court order and on Friday demolished a portion of a building on the disputed plot. This enraged Gangamma’s sons Muniraju alias Babli and Mahesh.

“Babli and Mahesh sent a message to Ranganath that they were ready to forgo the disputed land if he stopped demolishing their house,” Rathor said. A meeting was arranged on Sunday morning in Ranganath’s chambers at the school. Babli and Mahesh arrived with some of their supporters. Some school staff were also around. Following negotiations, both sides agreed to share the disputed land and the festering row was set at rest.

Babli, Mahesh and their supporters returned once Ranganath was left alone at the school. They barged into his office, stabbed him to death with asharp-edged weapon and fled. The Magadi Road police rushed to the spot and registered a case of murder against Babli, Mahesh and their aides.

Hours later, Babli was tracked to Mahalakshmi Layout. Police said Babli allegedly tried to assault two policemen, when they tried to arrest him near Kirloskar Poultry Road.
