A brick for a cellphone: Shopper gets a raw deal

Bengaluru:

A student who had ordered a smartphone on etail major snapdeal.com was in for a rude shock when he opened the box on Monday.

Instead of a sleek phone, for which the youth had paid ` `6,605, was a piece of brick.

Whitefield resident Arun Kumar*, 24, had ordered a Nokia Lumia 630 on January 6 and opted for the cash-ondelivery facility. When the delivery boy knocked his door around 4pm, Arun couldn’t wait to lay his hands on the new buy. He paid the boy ` `6,605 and collected the package. As the delivery boy lingered around, Arun opened the parcel only to be stunned.

He approached the delivery boy, who called his boss and was told not to return the money. Arun immediately dialled Snapdeal’s customer care number. “The executives told me they will register a complaint and asked me to mail them snapshots of the brick piece, box and the delivery boy,” Arun told TOI.

He said he had read of such incidents in newspapers but never imagined it would happen to him. “I haven’t yet decided whether to register a police complaint,” he said.

The delivery boy was aghast too. “I joined the job only two days ago. I really don’t know how this happened. I informed my boss immediately and he told me that our job is to collect the money and deliver the parcel. We are not responsible for anything else.“ Only last month, a Pune resident who ordered two iPhones from Snapdeal was delivered pieces of wood.

Though Darshan Kabra had chosen the cash-on-delivery option, he refused to hand over the cost — ` `40,508 — to the delivery person, thus saving himself the wait of getting the sum refunded. Issue resolved: Snapdeal Reacting to the goof-up, Snapdeal.com said, “The problem has been solved.Cash has been refunded to the customer and a fresh order has been placed.“

A Snapdeal spokesperson had earlier said, “Snapdeal is an online marketplace which connects buyers and sellers to provide people the widest assortment of products.

However, for customers we are the point of contact and we take all measures to ensure our buyers have a great shopping experience.” “In this case, we deeply regret the mix-up. As soon as the case was brought to our notice, the team got in touch with the customer and resolved the issue,” said the spokesperson, adding, “We have initiated an investigation to identify and address origin of this issue. We will take stringent measures to rectify this and prevent future occurrences.” (*name changed)
