Mad Rush Eases at Gas Dealers Across City

The New Indian Express

CHENNAI: If you are one among the 55 per cent of registered gas consumers in Tamil Nadu who have not yet registered for Direct Benefit Transfer for LPG (DBTL), you need not dread at waiting for your turn in long queues at the gas agency.

According to gas suppliers in Chennai, the scene now is peaceful compared to the rush they witnessed prior to January 1. “We used to get around 500 forms daily, now we get only 150,” said a dealer in Adyar.

As a consequence of this, agencies have begun to accept the ‘name-change’ requests from many consumers who were turned away earlier. “In December we refused to collect these regularisation forms as we had to finish our seeding formalities. But now we are relatively free and are accepting them,” said another gas agency dealer.

Senior Oil company officials said as of January 8, 45 per cent of consumers have been keyed into the system to receive the subsidy directly into their bank accounts. While Ariyalur leads with 59 per cent, the figure for Chennai is again comparatively lower at 38.32 per cent. Across the country, half the 15.3 per cent consumers have been fully registered (Cash Transfer Compliant) and so far Rs.1260 Crore have been transferred.

“More people are aware of the scheme and have begun to trust it as the cash has begun to get transferred into the accounts,” said a senior Indane official.

The subsidy amount, around Rs.300, arrives in the account after 3 to 4 working days once the gas cylinder has been delivered, officials said.
